I am a professional designer, turned professional educator, turned professional researcher. In the years that passed between the first and the last stage in this ongoing process, I became a problem-solver with a deep interest in the root causes of those problems and rigorous methods to address them. This journey has taken me across continents, languages, and disciplines. It has made me an eternal learner and teacher, a big-picturer and a dot-connector.
I hold a Master’s degree in Information Design and a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education from the University of British Columbia. I am currently an Associate Teaching Professor and the Information Design and Data Visualization Graduate Program Coordinator at Northeastern University, campus Vancouver. I am into information design, media and digital humanities. My research interests include visual literacy, semiotics and rhetoric, visualization, typography, typometry and editorial design, among others.
Soy un diseñador profesional transformado en educador e investigador profesional. En los años que han transcurrido entre estas diferentes facetas de mi carrera, me convertí en un solucionador de problemas con un profundo interés en sus causas y métodos rigurosos para enfrentarlos. Este viaje me a llevado a través de continentes, idiomas y disciplinas. Me ha enseñado a disfrutar mi papel como aprendiz, como maestro y generalista.
Tengo una maestría de Diseño de la Información y un doctorado (Ph.D.) en educación en alfabetización y lenguaje de la Universidad de British Columbia. Soy profesor asociado de enseñanza y coordino el programa de maestría en diseño de la información y visualización de datos en Northeastern University campus Vancouver, Canadá. Estoy interesado en diseño, medios y humanidades digitales. Mis intereses de investigación incluyen alfabetización visual, semiótica y retórica, visualización, tipografía, tipometría y diseño editorial, entre otros.
