I am a professional designer, turned professional educator, turned professional researcher. In the years that passed between the first and the last stage in this ongoing process, I became a problem-solver with a deep interest in the root causes of those problems and rigorous methods to address them. This journey has taken me across continents, languages, and disciplines. It has made me an eternal learner and teacher, a big-picturer and a dot-connector.
I hold a Master’s degree in Information Design and a Ph.D. in Language and Literacy Education from the University of British Columbia. As an independent academic researcher, I am into design, media and digital humanities. My research interests include visual literacy, semiotics and rhetoric, visualization, typography, typometry and editorial design, among others. I am a faculty member at the Master of Educational Technology at UBC, where I teach about the history and evolution of the concepts of text and technology.
Soy un diseñador profesional transformado en educador e investigador profesional. En los años que han transcurrido entre estas diferentes facetas de mi carrera, me convertí en un solucionador de problemas con un profundo interés en sus causas y métodos rigurosos para enfrentarlos. Este viaje me a llevado a través de continentes, idiomas y disciplinas. Me ha enseñado a disfrutar mi papel como aprendiz, como maestro y generalista.
Tengo una maestría de Diseño de la Información y un doctorado (Ph.D.) en educación en alfabetización y lenguaje de la Universidad de British Columbia. Como investigador independiente, estoy interesado en diseño, medios y humanidades digitales. Mis intereses de investigación incluyen alfabetización visual, semiótica y retórica, visualización, tipografía, tipometría y diseño editorial, entre otros. Soy parte del personal académico del programa de la Maestría en Tecnologías Educativas en UBC, donde enseño sobre la historia y evolución de los conceptos de texto y tecnología.
